A program reported to be the first ransomware software running under “Transmission” a bit torrent client.
The software manufacturers server was hacked and a copy of Transmission 2.90 containing the malware payload was put up in place of the real copy of the software.
It took several days for the hack to be discovered, by which time approximately 6500 copies of the infected code had been downloaded.
The software developer worked with Apple techs to shut down the threat, however for some users this has come too late to stop files on their computers being encrypted and asked to pay a ransom of 1 bitcoin ($540AUD) to remove the encryption.
Compared to Microsoft Windows, this threat is very small, but Mac users should see this as a warning. If one developer can be hacked, so can others so Mac users need to make sure they start exercising care when downloading software in future.
